Do you find it difficult to say no and put in boundaries in your relationships?
Are people always coming to you for help and advice?
Are you concerned more about the needs and feelings of others than you are about your own?
Have you often felt responsible for other people’s happiness?
Do you find yourself excessively worrying about other people’s problems and trying to solve them?
Do you struggle with excessive feelings of guilt and anxiety around relationships?
Is it difficult to maintain a sense of individuality in relationships?
If you said yes to 3 or more of the above questions, it’s possible that you have issues with codependency.
While it is admirable to care about and help other people in times of difficulty – codependency takes it to the extreme.
Codependency is the term used to describe an unhealthy relationship dynamic, in which a person is more concerned about the needs of others than their own. It often involves excessive care-taking or enabling, and an unhealthy need for recognition or approval.
If you tend to focus excessively on other people’s problems, you end up ignoring your own needs and feelings. This can have devastating effects on not only your emotional and psychological well-being, but also on your physical health.
Suppression of feelings can lead to stress, anxiety and depression and has also been linked to a range of health issues, such as heart disease, cancer and auto-immune diseases
Also, when you give far more than you take, you will eventually start to feel unappreciated and resentful in your relationships.
Overtime, you will likely begin to lose sight of what it is that makes you happy and fulfilled, which leads to feelings of chronic emptiness and dis-satisfaction
